PROJECT REPORT: E-WASTE MANAGEMENT AWARENESS DRIVE (2022)
Comprehensive E-Waste Management & Environmental Sensitization Campaign
Region: Jammu & Kashmir (Union Territory)
Duration: Annual Session 2022
Organized By: GHRT International
In Collaboration With: National Green Tribunal (NGT) & Pollution Control Bodies
Executive Summary
In the year 2022, GHRT International, under the visionary leadership of Chairman Dr. H. R. Rehman, executed a landmark environmental awareness project across the high-terrain landscapes of Jammu & Kashmir. Recognizing the fragile ecosystem of the Himalayas and the escalating threat of electronic waste (e-waste), GHRT International partnered with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and local pollution control bodies to launch a massive sensitization drive.
The campaign successfully covered all 20 districts of the region, reaching approximately 4.5 Lakh (450,000) beneficiaries, including students, teachers, and government officers. The project focused on the scientific disposal of e-waste, the implementation of regulatory frameworks, and the mitigation of environmental hazards.
Project Objectives
The primary objectives of the mission were to:
- Sensitize the Youth: Educate students in schools and colleges about the hazardous components of e-waste (Lead, Mercury, Cadmium) and their long-term impact on health and the environment.
- Policy Implementation: Assist government officers in understanding the practical implementation of E-Waste Management Rules (as mandated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change).
- Institutional Adoption: Encourage educational and government institutions to set up proper e-waste collection channels.
- Preserve the Ecosystem: Specifically target high-terrain and ecologically sensitive zones where waste management infrastructure is often lacking.
Geographical Scope & Coverage
The project was logistically challenging due to the difficult topography of the region. However, the team successfully permeated all 20 Districts of Jammu & Kashmir:

Key Activities & Methodology
The campaign utilized a multi-pronged approach to ensure maximum retention of the message:
Institutional Visits
The team visited 180 institutions, comprising:
Schools
Interactive workshops, painting competitions, and "E-Waste Warrior" pledge ceremonies for children.
Colleges & Universities
Technical sessions on e-waste recycling technologies and circular economy.
Government Premises
Round-table discussions with administrative officers regarding the enforcement of NGT guidelines on pollution control.
Sensitization Workshops
Expert speakers highlighted the “Silent Killers” in e-waste, explaining how improper dismantling leads to soil and water contamination, particularly affecting the groundwater tables in mountainous regions.
Distribution of IEC Materials
Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials—including posters, pamphlets, and safety guides—were distributed to ensure the message remained after the sessions concluded.
Leadership & Monitoring
A defining feature of this project was the direct, hands-on involvement of the leadership.
Chairman’s Role:
Dr. H. R. Rehman, Chairman of GHRT International, personally led the delegation to all 20 districts. His presence was not merely ceremonial; he closely monitored the execution of awareness sessions in remote high-terrain schools to ensure no region was left behind. His direct interaction with students and officers emphasized the gravity of the mission and motivated local volunteers to sustain the momentum.
"Environmental protection is not just a policy; it is a moral obligation to the next generation."
Dr. H. R. Rehman
